About Us

The Department of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Anadolu University, which became part of Eskişehir Technical University on 18 May 2018, began teaching its first students in the autumn semester of 1994-1995. In the 1997-1998 academic year, the department transitioned to partial English-language instruction (30%). The department awarded its first degrees in 1998. In the 1998-1999 academic year, the department relocated to the İkinci Eylül Campus. Teaching and research activities have been conducted in the new building on the İkinci Eylül Campus since 1998. On 18 May 2018, it became part of Eskişehir Technical University. In addition to undergraduate education, the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Institute of Postgraduate Education offers Master's degrees with thesis, distance learning Master's degrees without thesis in Environmental Management, and Doctoral degrees.

Environmental engineering is a branch of engineering that conducts education and research on the optimal use of natural resources such as air, water, and soil; the control and elimination of factors causing their pollution at source; and the prevention of aesthetic and economic losses caused by pollution to create environmental conditions conducive to human health and well-being. The title of environmental engineer began to be used after the 1960s. Universities expanded their academic programmes and treated environmental engineering as a separate science and engineering discipline.

The global climate change and environmental disasters we have experienced in recent years, and the addition of new disasters and environmental damage every day, are an indication that the responsibility of environmental engineers is increasing. According to the World Economic Forum's Global Risk Analysis Survey, environmental issues feature five times in the top ten most serious risks globally over the next ten years, with climate action issues, extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, human impact on the environment, and natural resource crises. The importance of environmental engineers is also evident in the Higher Education Council's Future Professions Studies, which also predicts new professions such as Green Collar Workers, Climate Analysts, Green Energy Engineers, and Waste Managers.

Environmental Engineers, for whom demand is increasing both nationally and internationally, play an active role in areas such as developing sustainable production processes, designing circular economy processes, addressing global climate change, designing systems for water/wastewater management, designing air quality control systems, converting waste into valuable materials and energy, and implementing environmental legislation. Environmental Engineers are employed in public institutions such as Ministries, Universities, the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), the Provincial Bank, and Research Institutions, as well as in the private sector, including factories, power plants, recycling facilities, and consulting firms.

Accreditation

The Department of Environmental Engineering at Eskişehir Technical University was accredited by MÜDEK (a member of EUR-ACE and the International Engineering Alliance) for the first time from 30 September 2009 to 30 September 2014, and for the second time from 30 September 2014 - 30 September 2018, and subsequently for the period 30 September 2018 - 30 September 2022. Our department has been re-accredited for a fourth period until 30 September 2025.
